HonorsAlgebra II Course Information

This is a fast paced, information-packed course.  You will need to be on your toes and alert to be

successful.  There are a few things you may want to know about as we begin, so let me try to lay

 it all out…

How will I be graded?

We will us a 10 point grading scale (90-80-70-60).  Test will count as 50% of your total grade each quarter.  Quizzes and Projects will count as 25% of your total grade each quarter.  Homework (including some small projects) will count as 25% of your total grade each quarter.  Your semester grade will be determined with each quarter counting as 40% and the final exam counting as 20% of your final grade.

What will homework be like in this class?

  • Expect to have homework everyday.

  • Always show your work on all assignments.

  • Odd answers on in the back of the book...so check answers!

  • Many assignments will require the use of a graphing calculator.

  • Be prepared to have your homework graded the day after it is assigned.

  • Put proper headings on assignments. (This helps tremendously on homework quizzes!)

  • Always do your work in pencil.  (Assignments in ink are not accepted.)

  • No late assignments are accepted!

How will homework be graded?

Homework is not collected and graded on a daily basis.  However, homework is required and will be assigned daily.  Students are expected to keep up with homework and have it in class every day.  Homework quizzes will be unannounced and given once or twice per week.  Students may use their assignments on a homework quiz, but no books!  Each question on a homework quiz must include the original question, as well as all work required arriving at the final solution.  Homework quizzes will be limited to five minutes.  (On occasions completed assignments may be requested to be turned in with homework quizzes.)

How often will there be tests and quizzes?

  • Generally, a test or quiz will be given each week.

  • Unannounced (pop) quizzes could happen, but are not the norm.

What should I know about the attendance policy?

You are expected to be in class.  If you have an excused absence, you will be allowed to make up your work for full credit by the same number of days you were consecutively absent. Unexcused absences follow the same procedure as excused absences; however, you will only receive 50%-80% of the grade you earn.  Please refer to the school attendance policy for complete details on excused and unexcused absences and make-up work.

What should I bring to class?

Materials: You are expected to have the following daily unless told otherwise:

  • TEXTBOOK & STUDENT JOURNAL

  • Pencils/Erasers [Mistakes do happen, so no pens!]

  • Notebook paper, graph paper (and probably a folder too) for taking notes and holding handouts

  • Scientific Calculator: We will be using TI-83+/84+  (Classroom sets are available, but may not be loaned out. If you have been considering purchasing a graphics calculator, now would be a great time to buy one!  On test and quizzes if you own a calculator other than the TI-83 or TI-84 plus you will be required to use one of the class calculators.)

What are my responsibilities when I am absent?

Notes and Homework

  • Get notes from a peer.

  • Read the section and look at examples.

  • Get the assignment from the syllabus, web page, Schoology, or a peer in class.

  • Do the assignment, if you need help come in before or after school for assistance!

Test and Quizzes

Make-up:

  • As per school policy you have the same amount of days as you were absent to make up missing test/quizzes.

  • Any test/quiz not made up in the appropriate amount of time will be a zero.

What if I need to leave the classroom?

I am a reasonable person!  If there is an emergency/situation and you need to leave the classroom

for some reason (restroom pass, locker pass, drink pass, etc.), just ask.

What happens when I have fieldtrip?

Students wishing to attend a fieldtrip must have a grade of at least 70% in the class.

Each student is responsible for all material/work missed due to attending fieldtrips.  If a test is scheduled the day following a fieldtrip, the student will be required to take the test on that day.  If the fieldtrip is scheduled on a test day, the student will need to make arrangements to stay after school and take the test on the testing date.  Students are counted as attending school on fieldtrips and as such, are expected to be responsible for all work completed in class.  Please refer to the student handbook for information concerning fieldtrips.

What are my responsibilities when I have a sectional?

Sectionals are considered an in-school fieldtrip.  Since sectionals are a required part of a student’s grade, students will be encouraged to take them as scheduled.  All work/material missed due to attending a sectional is the student’s responsibility.   If a student attends a sectional on a test day they must stay after school and take the test on that same day.

What should I do if I don’t understand a concept?

Always ask questions if you are confused!  There will always be time to ask questions in class.  If you need more help I am available both before and after school for extra help.

In the past there has been a math-tutoring lab available Monday-Thursday.

How am I expected to conduct myself in class? (DISCIPLINE)

One main rule . . . BE GOOD.

Wear  Your School ID!

Cell phones should be on silent and put away.

BYOD -(Phones will not be used as BYOD in our class) Use of devices in classroom is per teacher discretion. Use of devices for non-educational purposes will not be permitted!

No food or drink in class unless I have given it out or pre-arranged it.

You can have gum, but I do no want to see it or hear it.

Be respectful of others (by being polite, attentive and quiet during class).

Be here, be on time and be attentive.  Read the attendance policy for tardy procedures and other details.

Follow school guidelines for BYOD.

I take phones if they are out or being used during class.  Your administrator will give them back.

I give zeroes to cheaters on the assessment in question.

If everyone gets C’s or better on a test, we will celebrate!

Otherwise, all other school conduct rules apply.
